Everything you have can move to something else, something bigger, if you follow the right path. Just like – scales in music. If you know your major scales then you have a path to follow, because each note is a chromatic sequence or pathway to the next.

But it’s how you assemble those notes, express their sequence, prioritise the most important and delete the rest, (less is more) and attach your own unique fingerprint to its structure –that is when true creative beauty emerges.

And like all art form, you benefit from other people because what they can give to you conceptually in terms of being able to think creatively in a way that you never would, sometimes gives you a whole different approach or a different idea.

So with collaboration and structure – a whole new discovery takes place and that’s when you find your true place in music …in business… in life.

As a musician, there are so many notes at our disposal and so many scales in so many keys to master. There is an endless universe of expression and opportunity out there, but it’s so easy to get distracted, lose focus and play off key. It takes instinct, practice and dedication to seize those opportunities to go out and showcase your talent. Most important – be different. Your own unique fingerprint is what the world is waiting for.

Whenever I play my guitar I’m always mindful that my guitar pick contains my unique fingerprint. So I put a value on what I play and give something worth listening to. Those same values exist when I speak to an audience. Say something that matches your audience expectation of you, and if you exceed that expectation then you will be invited back. You will have done your job.

This reminds me of something Tommy Emmanuel once told me when I was interviewing him on the Toombul centre stage. “Baz, everyone needs a gig. We all need somewhere to play and give our best, and hope that we are asked back. That’s what performance is about – making an impression, being remembered and asked back.”

To you, my business colleague- this is my point.

Try to make every single note you play or compose the very best that is possible, because the quality of what you give in business reflects the quality of what you get in return. Everything you have can move to something else, something bigger, if you follow the right path. Take the bull by the horns, put yourself out there and if necessary, go out on a limb. That’s where the best fruit is.
